I saw the show - where were Beryl, Lianne, et al.? I thought it was a show about WOW. I only saw Joe talking about how excited he is, which is fine, but I would've much rather seen the actual editors. Joe gets enough camera time on CCTV9 already.
By the way, Joe, the purpose of a blog is discussion - can't you find more time for your students to address comments? And discussing blogs as diaries... oooh, there's a large contigent of bloggers who'd be really mad about that definition, especially in Hong Kong.

Davesgonechina,
What show did you watch? Lianne and Beryl were interviewed at the beginning of the program. Students were also shown working on WOW in the classroom.
Also, Professor Bosco did not say that blogs were "diaries"; the executive from BlogChina said it repeatedly, however.
As far as more comments from reporters and editors: it isn't easy for most of the staff to get online in their dormitories; also, so many of the comments are from China bashers just spoiling for a fight. We do not understand the basis for the vilification, and are at a loss as to how to handle such personal belligerence towards us and China.

You and China are not the same. Don't try to include "China" bashing in this! I think most of the bashing in the comments column are against your one sided or narrow minded "reporting" diary entries. Many of your "articles" deserve to be slammed. Of course you think you are taking the higher road by not rebutting. The truth is that you are at a loss to rebutt about 99% of what the comments say. I suggest that if you were much, much, much more balanced you wouldn't get so many negative comments. I would love to have dinner (my treat) with any of you student "journalists" and talk about it. Any takers?

Come on, you and China are not the same. Don't hide behind that. Maybe you wouldn't get so much "bashing" if you were a great deal more balanced! But you don't know how. 20 years of brainwashing is quite difficult to overcome. How can you overcome it when you don't know it has happened to you?
If you need help just let me know. I will take you out to dinner (my treat) and we can talk, if you like. Any takers? I am in BJ:)

WOW editors or writers will no longer respond in any fashion to "anonymous" comments; and they will certainly not entertain any "invitations" from "anonymous" parties.
Indeed, the policy of WOW allowing "anonymous" comments is under discussion and review. After all, no one here hides behind anonymity, yet we are the ones accused of being cowed by an oppressive, monolithic government.

Whatever. What does it matter if we are known or not? I (and I guess others) just don't want to bother to "sign up". YOU don't have to "hide" anything because everything you say fits in with the governments policies! Of course you have nothing to "fear" you just say China "good" everthing else "bad". The idea of removing the "Anonymous" identity is clearly a WOW characteristic. If you can't deal with it close down your site, change your style or live with it! Don't you think people have the right to speak their opinion even if it doesn't side with you without knowing who they are? I don't see much ,if any, CHINA bashing just your staffs ideas getting bashed. Many of you seem to bash other countries and people pretty well. It just shows that people ARE reading this sight. Telling people to "sign up" or shut up is just like the system you seem to be governed by. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree. ANONYMOUS

While on a 3-week trip to China to see some of its unique sights, and to visit my son, a BFSU student, I happened to see the CCTV Dialogue program about your journalism project.
I was particularly dismayed by the non-journalistic, extremely slanted views expressed by Mr. Bosco.
Contrary to his statements, I'm sure censoring Mr. Bosco is not on the agenda of any U.S. government official. Even if he were, any attempt to censor him, or any other journalist, would be exposed and punished. As President Nixon, and many others in government have learned, the U.S. free press will find out about such anti-democratic activity, and the U.S. public will not allow it to continue.
Also, contrary to Mr. Bosco, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission is NOT involved in any censorship of political commentary on U.S. radio or television. It's only censoring functions are focussed on keeping indecent sexually explicit material and a small set of "swear" words off the public airwaves. And, again contrary to Mr. Bosco, the FCC has no interest in censoring ANYTHING on the internet - even if it somehow developed the magical capability to do so.
Unfortunately, even in the United States, some university professors like Mr. Bosco abuse their power of authority to teach ideas based on personal prejudices and agendas, and not on the objective truth.
Students, especially in journalism, must learn to think and research for themselves and not take the words of any professor as the whole truth.
Fortunately, the internet gives you access to a world of information, and eventually you can find the truth for yourselves. Search the files of the major news organizations around the world. By comparing their reports, and applying your common sense, you can arrive at the truth. I especially recommend U.S. News and Report for generally fair and accurate reports of news stories.
Best wishes to all of you for success in your lives and careers.

OK, I missed the first few minutes, so I missed that part.
As for responding to comments, I realize that there's school to go to and that internet access is limited. My students have the same problems. But I think that you're missing out on one of the best parts of having a blog and not a regular website, and if you found more time to respond, you'd have more readers (both good and bashers).
As for the bashers... heh, well, that's a whole discussion in itself, isn't it? What counts as bashing and what counts as constructive criticism? I think not responding to anonymous commenters is absolutely fine. At the very least anonymous commenters should make up a pseudonym so you know which one is which!
As for them spoiling for a fight, well, no one has the right to be rude and still expect a response. But if you really do want to engage in dialogue, then there are some upsetting and controversial points that people are going to bring up - and they won't be anonymous and while not rude many will be confrontational. And the only way you ultimately deal with "bashers", really, is to confront them and tear their argument to shreds with a good counterargument. I bet you'd find alot of anonymous commenters will become less aggressive or disappear if you challenge their assertions head on. Look to a place like Peking Duck and you'll see that most of the time the discussion hangs together, despite anger from both sides.

Yes,it would be nice to get a response to the so called "bashing". Many people write in to challenge the "articles" on this sight. I hope that this is not a surprise? Isn't it expected?
